September was one of the most memorable months in recent United States history for hurricanes. Hurricane Harvey and Irma were back-to-back devastating disasters for Texas and Florida respectively. Hurricane Irma prompted one of the largest evacuations in U.S. history, especially in West Florida. Many residents were left without power and housing for days. Residents affected by the storm needed a warm shower, place to relax, or a place to sleep. Crunch Fitness, extended an offer to their members allowing the free use of their facilities and utilities to family and friends, as well as an included a complimentary workout for guests.

 

ABC Financial client, Crunch Fitness West Florida based in Tampa, Florida, faced minor damage compared to the rest of the region. Crunch West Florida President Geoffrey Dyer and his team responded to the community emergency by offering their facilities free of charge for those in need. Working in conjunction with ABC Financial’s SMS provider, Crunch sent 39,330 complimentary texts to the community offering relief at Crunch facilities. The response to the outreach was overwhelming as many without power showed up to the Crunch facilities. “The power of SMS communication was evident as members in the Crunch database were sent instant notifications of the emergency assistance offered by Crunch, a message that would otherwise be difficult to receive through traditional outlets with the state in such disarray.”

 

 

“When the hurricane hit, more than 6.5 million Florida homes and businesses (64% of the state) did not have any power, but with the help of communications via text, we were able to become one of the first places of relief for people in need”, stated Crunch’s Christian Dyer, “We were able to have such an impactful humanitarian effort with the assistance of SMS communication.”
